Nature Friends is perhaps one of Los Angeles area best kept secrets, its hard to believe that something like this exists so close to this urban metropolis and yet so far and so close to nature.

A Visit to the Nature Friends House in Grindelwald, Switzerland
By Solveig Leslie and Joe & Lela Hajek
We wanted to see the lovely glacier mountains of the Alps. What better way to do this than to find a Swiss Nature Friends house to stay at? But the question was, how do we locate one and how do we get there?
The Internet informed us that there was a Nature Friends house in Grindelwald, Switzerland. The Swiss tourist bureau sent us brochures that contained pictures and information of the Grindelwald Nature Friends hostel. We studied maps and read Europe By Rail. With this information we purchased 15-day Swiss Rail passes.
Well, it was a great adventure. The trains were easy to manage, all information was readily available at each station and many people spoke English. We left the main station at Zurich to head toward the mountains to the Interlaken Station where we took the train to Grindelwald.
Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome from Verana and Heinz, the caretakers. This Nature Friends house is not a hotel nor is it a rough mountain lodge. It’s a lovely hostel open to Nature Friends members and guests. The rooms are clean and bright with bunk beds. Toilets are in the hall and showers are in the basement.
On the first floor is a beautiful dining room and sitting area. Breakfast is included in the very reasonable price of lodging. Dinner can be ordered. Verana is an excellent cook and Heinz, a jolly waiter. There is another dining room and a well-equipped kitchen for guests who want to do their own cooking.
During our eight-day stay, we met people from Norway, para-sailors from Japan and a group of hikers from France. Everyone was happy to be in the mountains. Heinz and Verana did everything they could to get us the best information and deals. There are so many trains, gondolas, chairlifts and buses to explore this wonderful area. It’s a great place to walk, or to be lazy; a great vacation place – and it’s a Nature Friends house!
